Day 14: My Thankful

This is yesterday's list, since I was way too tired to blog last night.

I'm thankful for the person who introduced me to Pretzel M&Ms last month. I don't even eat regular M&Ms like that, but these ones are SO good and addicting. I posted on Facebook sometime this week that I was craving Pretzel M&Ms, and yesterday at work my boss gave me a bag. How sweet is that! I was blown away. It's the little things that amaze me and make me even more thankful.

Once again, I'm thankful for my natural hair. It was raining yesterday, and I had left my umbrella in the car on purpose. I just wanted to see what would happen...lol. My hair continued to be curly and kinda looked a little better. I don't miss the days of freaking out when my relaxed hair got wet.

I'm thankful that tomorrow is PAY DAY!! I also thank God in advance that one day I won't be living paycheck to paycheck.

I'm thankful that I'm learning my way around the kitchen. I'm taking the initiative to cook more. Last night, I was in a breakfast mood. Pancakes, scrambled eggs with cheese, and bacon was dinner. The pancakes didn't compare to my mom's, but I'm trying. And everything was still good. =)

I'm thankful that one of my co-workers reads the blog! I had no idea! *SHOUTOUT to Paige!!* :-) I'm thankful for everyone who takes the time out to read what we have to say.

I'm thankful that GOD gave me the idea to start this blog, and He always gives me the words to write. Have a wonderful day!!

Day 10: My Thankful

I'm thankful for my life.

I'm thankful that God separated me from certain people. I didn't see it at the time, but now I realize that it was ALL for my good! I wouldn't have grown and drawn closer to God if it wasn't for His divine hand removing me from certain people, situations, and things.

I'm thankful for an invite to a delicious home-cooked dinner tonight at a friend's house.

I'm also thankful for the opportunity to get to know other people outside of my circle.

I'm thankful for this natural hair once again. It's so easy and pretty much effortless. Just need a couple of products on deck to assist in the process.

I'm thankful that my mom and I seem to genuinely be getting closer. It's not as forced and gushy as it has been (something I don't like). God truly answers prayers. =)

Day 1: My Thankful

I've noticed a couple people posting on Facebook why they're thankful each day, in the form of Day 1, Day 2, etc. I've decided to do the same via this blog. I want to end each day with a note of thankfulness regarding that particular day, or something I just feel led to thank God for. I don't know how long go for; the plan is 30 days, but you may find me going on and on and end up in a praise break line somewhere lol [very very rare lol]

Here goes...feel free to share a comment on why YOU'RE thankful as well.

I daily thank GOD for my sanity and peace of mind. Today is no different.

You just don't understand, I was about to lose my mind on several occasions! I've had spells of depression and suicidal thoughts in the past, and I'm just thankful that those thoughts didn't rule my mind for me to act on it.

I'm thankful that I was able to keep a job for nearly 6 years; some people aren't employed at all right now.

I'm thankful for Wi-Fi in my house. I remember the days of going to the library to get on the internet and/or putting my laptop in a certain position on my bed to steal signal from the neighbors lol smh!

I'm thankful that I have my own room and bathroom, and I don't pay rent!

I'm thankful for a car in my own name.

I'm thankful for my singleness; it is truly a gift. [Even though it's getting chilly, and I'd like to be booed up somewhere. Just kidding lol....no really, though... haha]

I'm thankful for my HAIR! Natural hair is amazing, let me tell you!

And that's all for now.... :-) What are you thankful for?

"I am not my hair" Are you sure?

So I've been wanting to talk about this for a while! And today I experienced something that really set me off lol (BTW I've been completely natural for a little over a year now and this is just my opinion!)

I was in line at Target and overheard a group of females. Three of them had natural hair and one of them was relaxed. One of the natural girls told the one with relaxed hair that she NEEDS to go natural and then asked "What are you scared of? Are you ashamed of your natural hair?" *Pause*

That conversation bothered me so much! And I've heard those types of comments so often. Some are similiar and some are vice versa but that has to be one of my biggest pet peeves.

Two weeks ago, I was at my cousin's house. She's been natural for four years and has hair down her back. Us natural ladies would call it BSL or Bra Strap Length. Her hair is very beautiful but she CHOOSES to wear sew-ins. One of my other cousins was also there and she said "I don't know why she wears all that weave. Wear your hair out!"

*Pause again* Ugh! Leave her alone!

I never understand why some women feel the need to tell others what they NEED to do with their own hair. People choose to wear their hair in whatever way works for them. I've heard people say that women who get relaxers, keep their hair long, wear weave, etc are insecure. Really?? And I'm not targeting just women who are natural by any means. I've heard it from many different people. So what does "I am not my hair mean?"

To me, that phrase means that no matter how a person CHOOSES to wear THEIR hair, they are not "titled" by their hair. Some people prefer short hair, others natural, others long and relaxed, some with weave, others with purple pink or orange, what does it matter??? If a woman with natural hair chooses to flat iron her hair every week of the year except one, then that's her choice. I understand people talk about the importance of healthy hair. But if a woman wants to do a process on her hair that you wouldn't do on yours, the beautiful part is, you don't have to! lol If you truly believe that phrase then the label of insecure or ashamed wouldn't be thought of because of the way a woman wears her hair. Its her hair, therefore her choice!

I know a few fierce females who will wear their hair in a short cut one day, long wavy weave the next, braids the next, and a fade after that. And that's what works for them. Now I'm not at all against educating each other about how to take care of our hair whether natural or relaxed. But the great thing about being grown is that YOU can make the best decision for YOU.

People know how they like to look and I'm not against encouraging people to love themselves but loving ourselves goes much further than how we choose to wear our hair. I've never been against relaxers. I was relaxed for YEARS but chose to go natural for the health of MY hair. Some people are relaxed because that's what works for them like that young lady in Target. Some dye their hair because they WANT some color. Some wear sew ins like my cousin because it protects their hair and helps it grow. Let people do what they want to do!

I'm very much against conforming and I feel that many times people try to make others conform to what THEY find acceptable. Some people think relaxed and weave is insecure, some people think natural and kinky is unattractive. But what people don't realize is that by forcing their views on someone else (go natural, get a relaxer, cut it, grow it) about how they should wear their hair or whatever else, they're assisting society with bringing more division amongst black women. If we really are not our hair, why does it matter how it's worn?? Let people express themselves whichever way they want!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. There's a big difference between encouragement and FORCING your views. Back off of people and let them do what's best for them! *end rant*

Short Hair, Don't Care

So I finally went completely NATURAL for my hair. I hadn't had a relaxer since Oct./Nov 2010, and my cousin cut all the relaxer out (over a month ago) early in July. I finally got the courage to start wearing it out last week, and I must say that I LOVE this new look for me! It is true what they say, that cutting your relaxed hair is so F R E E I N G!! My hair feels so soft, fluffy, and healthy! I feel more confident and somewhat Afro-centric. You should try it one day. :-)

Still amazes me that my hair is so curly! Who woulda thought? Not I...

This is an entirely new journey for me. I'm excited about it, yet I have NO IDEA what I've gotten myself into! lol...join me!

A New Hair Dream

Hey people!

Hope you all are having a fabulous weekend and enjoying some nice pretty weather! I know I am! I just came back from a natural hair event in Norfolk, VA. Since I was mainly helping out with registration for the event, I didn't really get to see all that was going on inside. I got to step in a few times though. :-)

Doesn't it seem like EVERYONE and their mama is going "natural" with their hair these days? There's nothing wrong with it, as long as you do it for the right reasons (and not because everyone's doing it). I guess you could say my hair is in that transitioning stage; I haven't had a relaxer in about 7 months. Right now, I have in some kinky twists. Thank God! lol! You just don't understand...

You may be aware of most of my flaws, and my hair is no exception. I've never been good with my hair. Ever. Even when it was fully relaxed, if it wasn't one thing...it was something else about it that was bothering me. I remember when I was younger and getting frustrated to TEARS (haha) because I couldn't do a ponytail without a lump at the top of my head. lol...

Last year was the first time I felt that I wrapped my hair correctly. Usually, it wouldn't stay up while I was brushing it. I would still wrap it with a whole bunch of hair overlapping the wrap band thingy. And of course, nothing would be on my hair in the morning. A mess, I know.

It seems like every time I do my hair, you can tell. It looks BIG, puffy, and dry! lol...that is why I'm going natural. I'm tired of dealing with this mess! lol...I don't want to attempt to wrap anything else, brush anything, straighten anything out, or comb my nappy roots. I want some locks!!!!

I originally wanted sisterlocks, but now I'm considering starter locks. I was reminded today that I need to do my research on anything that I might be interested in. So, I will be doing just that.

I already know that sisterlocks are extremely pricey for me, the college student with the part-time job. It's a reasonable price to start out the traditional locks, though. I'm realizing day by day that I'm not "big time" yet. Some things I just have to say "no" to right now, but I'll be back to it soon. I can't "keep up with the Jones's" anymore unless I wanna be living in the poor house lol...

I don't know about you, but I want to be wiser in my decisions from here on out. As much as I want to JUMP, GO, and DO, I have to be mindful of where CANDICE is in life. Sorry, I can't try to keep up with others anymore at this time. Gotta do me, and you gotta do you.

Continue to seek God for wisdom and guidance, do some research on your desires, and just stay in your own lane. Don't compare your life to another person's. When it's your time, it'll come.

*Just in case you forgot, I'm random. :-)
